There are many additives in engine oil. One of them is to keep the cylinder wall lubricated when stopped. So when you turn the engine over, there is still lubrication, so you don't dry start, and do excessive wear from lack of lubrication. It has the same effects as honey in cold conditions..Slowwww. Once the engine heats up close to operating temp, all of the additives are the same as 15/40 in flow. If it is extream cold, you may want to go to a lower viscosity, but it will be to thin in normal, above zero temperatures. One place I worked we had 5 weight oil, and 100% glycol antifreeze. But we were in temperatures about -10 and lower .the lowest I saw was -45 . If you have any concerns past that you might find an 800 # on the container. Call it and most of the time these guys will talk your ear off... But you will understand oil a lot better. Hope this info helps, and good luck.
