This would be the time for all of us to get busy and email our US Representatives and urge them to support his efforts. Some things will never change,you cant go buy the biggest truck or house because you make x amount of dollars, there is still a good living in trucking. Stop buying junk trucks that take all your money, get a note with some warranty to absorb some of that cost, keep good rubber and do your pm regularly, as they should be. You will see a good profit if you haul for a decent rate. For the most part trucking is one of the most exagerated business I`ve ever seen. Fishermen don`t tell as many lies as truckers do when it comes to making a living. I love trucking!!!! my truck hauls the clothes my children wear, the food they eat, the toys they get for christmas that santa brings, the wood to build our homes, the cars we drive and the parts to keep them running,the beautiful clothes that my wifes puts on that keeps a smile on my face, the hosiptal equipment to help our families when they are sick, the medicine we need to make us better. You can get one million truckers some place and all agree that we need to do something about this problem. And we need to shut it down on such a date until things change.. A few years ago the rail road shut it down.. They had crews out in the boonies that they had to go get.. Because when they say shut it down. It doesn't mean after you get unloaded, or loaded, it means NOW. But everybody in the non union trucking has that belief that you don't have to fight for anything and it will all be handed to you on a platter. Then their is this little feat of competion ,where one will go into another's customer, and not just cut the rate, but slice and dice that rate. It is getting to the point where somebody is going to pay to get that load. It used to be a Penny or two cut.. Now it's dollars cut per mile..but I've just got this new customer. \n Now... A few years ago the Canadians shut it down.. Funny thing.. It takes about 2 days for the public to realize that something is wrong as when they go to the store, the shelves are empty, or when they go to work, the JIT just isn't on time... About 4 days the Canadian government came to the truckers, and were forced to give them alot of what hey were asking for.. Less than a week of lost work.. If you can't afford to take a week off.. Then your in bigger trouble than you know. But you will be one of that group of 999,990 drivers that just snivel, but won't do anything about it. A small fleet/Owner Operator to a mega. It doesn't work that way. A fleet of 1-5 trucks is not going to be able to follow the same business model as a company with 15000 trucks like swift. Heck a fleet of 1-5 trucks cannot compete with a fleet of 20 trucks. The mega carriers can haul cheap, and still make money. I remember reading an artical about swift. Their trucks only profit $3/day. But when you've got 15000 truck profiting $3/day that's a big payday at the end of the year. They're self insured and I don't know many owner ops or small fleets that are self insured, I also don't know many of us that could live on only profiting $3/day. And I don't know many small fleets or O/O's that can survive on 1.60ish per mile. Swift Werner, CRST, CRE they all can. Why? Well when you're getting anywhere from 40-60 cent/gallon discounts on fuel yea you can haul cheap. It's not a matter of following the mega carriers on what they do, it's a matter of leveling out the playing field. The mistake a lot of people make is hauling it cheaper because they can. What kind of sense does that make? If I'm competeing with another carrier for a steady run that's paying 2.25/running mile on the hub and I get better fuel milage than him I'm not going to bid it down. I'm going to provide better service to the customer and take the frieght away that way. No sense in short changing myself right? My rates are not going to drop just because I get a fuel card that gives me cash price plus another 15 cents off. Does UPS give me a discount on frieght hell no why should I give somebody a discount on freight. The problem is we as owner opertators and small fleets are our own worst enemy but we don't blame ourselves. We sit there and pass the blame onto everything else in the industry instead of looking in the mirror and thinking we might be the problem. Until we can get everbody to talk to eachother sit down and agree that we need to quit cutting eachothers rates it'll never happen. I remember watching rates last year get chopped from 2.15/mile and drop all the way down to less than 1.40/mile now. Why did that happen. Well you can't tell me the brokers did it. A small fleet/Owner Operator to a mega. It doesn't work that way. A fleet of 1-5 trucks is not going to be able to follow the same business model as a company with 15000 trucks like swift. Heck a fleet of 1-5 trucks cannot compete with a fleet of 20 trucks. The mega carriers can haul cheap, and still make money. I remember reading an artical about swift. Their trucks only profit $3/day. But when you've got 15000 truck profiting $3/day that's a big payday at the end of the year. They're self insured and I don't know many owner ops or small fleets that are self insured, I also don't know many of us that could live on only profiting $3/day. And I don't know many small fleets or O/O's that can survive on 1.60ish per mile. Swift Werner, CRST, CRE they all can. Why? Well when you're getting anywhere from 40-60 cent/gallon discounts on fuel yea you can haul cheap. It's not a matter of following the mega carriers on what they do, it's a matter of leveling out the playing field. The mistake a lot of people make is hauling it cheaper because they can. What kind of sense does that make? If I'm competeing with another carrier for a steady run that's paying 2.25/running mile on the hub and I get better fuel milage than him I'm not going to bid it down. I'm going to provide better service to the customer and take the frieght away that way. No sense in short changing myself right? My rates are not going to drop just because I get a fuel card that gives me cash price plus another 15 cents off. Does UPS give me a discount on frieght hell no why should I give somebody a discount on freight. The problem is we as owner opertators and small fleets are our own worst enemy but we don't blame ourselves. We sit there and pass the blame onto everything else in the industry instead of looking in the mirror and thinking we might be the problem. it's simply, get rid of the owner-operators all you have left are the big trucking companys which are already saying yes to the new laws, i own my truck with a hopper, i live in Iowa, i think thats way fuel is high too it hits the owner-operator harder than the big company,our goverment must not see it ,this country operates by trucks, everything you buy or sell at one time or another was hauled by a truck, how would you like to be me i truck by the laws or try too and the farmer drives a truck down the road next to me don't have to carry a class A cdl or take a test no medical, no drug program, we can get our cdl pulled for med. problem they can drive the same truck down the road with the same med. problem --is life fair
