WHEN ARE THEY GOING TO GET IT?
These trucking companies will do everything to evade the real problem of why they can't get freight moved.. They will give you a new truck.. Ohhh boy that will put that meat and potatoes on the table at home..
Think of this.. If a person does piece work in some clothing factory that is a sweat shop. If some illegal alien is working out in the fields, doing piece work.. It's ohhh how terrible.. BUTif your a truck driver.. Well your making good money.. Quit complaining. Why is it alright to pay us piece work or milage? But nobody else? They give us titles like professional truck driver.. Name one other profession that you get paid piece work? Milage , etc? Even your doctor is incorporated and gives himself a salary or a wage.
Then they have all of these million dollar studies on why there's a driver shortage, or why drivers don't stay with a company for very long? Or why good drivers are leaving the industry? And they come up with .. Well we will buy them a new truck.. How about paying us a wage that is worth our time? Over 30 years ago I knew a friend of mine who drove for Safeway .. He had made 60,000 that year. Why can't we be like every other labor pool and be paid by the hour? I guess that they don't think that we are worth it. Let's give you something to think about.. We will have a 70 hour work week.. With 10 weeks off a year. With you being gone every night except those 10 weeks. At 15 dollars an hour.. And with a subsistence for food.. That's 2904 hours for the year.. 1260 is at time and half.. The other is straight time.. 1646 times 15 is $24,690.. 1260 times 22.50 is $28350. Then with subsistence that's 294 days times let's say 30 bucks. $8820 for a total of $61860. A year.. With don't forget 10 weeks off. So let's look at an unskilled labor working on a construction crew.. Home every night. Works from April to mid November due to weather shut down. And unemployment the other part of the year.. That's 7 months at 172 hours straight time per month, working 60 hours a week at 25.00 dollars an hour plus union benefits.. Such as a PENSION not a 104 k. 1204 straight time hours is $ 30100 . So 602 in ot at 37.50 is $ 22570.. Is $52675 a year about. Plus that unemployment let's say is 500 a week for 20 weeks is $10,000. For a total of $62675 for the year. With holidays ,Sundays , some Saturdays off work 7 months.. AND home every night.. With the family.. With absolutly no responsibility other than a shovel and some other hand tools that may be needed.. The only rules regulations and laws that need to know and observe are company, OSHA, and maybe MSHA. I do realize that these are approximate. That this figures can change with areas, etc. but that's is why these companies can't find drivers, or owner operators.. Why should you be one? And this other job was just a labor job.. Bay Area Rapid Transit workers.. Are getting about 90-100 dollars a year with their ot added. The police in San Francisco are getting over 100 ,with some getting over 200 for an officer.. And they all get to go home every night.. And they can't figure out how there is a driver shortage? And the answer is to give you a new truck? How about starting off by paying you by the hour.. From the minute that you leave the yard until you get back... Got to wait at the shipper. Paid. Wait at the receiver paid, wait in traffic? Paid.. Then there won't be a driver shortage.. And the bottom feeders that we see today aka meat in the seat will be shoved out as more skilled drivers will come back. That will solve the driver shortage... And it didn't cost a million for that answer either.. Sorry for my rant.. It's just that these idiots can't undestand what we stupid truck drivers already know.. But let's not ask them what's wrong, but let's have another study. Every CDL holder on this forum should be able to net gross to the house 75-100 thousand a year.. Think of the hours that you work.. Shouldn't it be time to start getting paid for it? Or are you like I am.. It's just a hobby? Something to do? Then the next big question.. Will you be able to retire ?
