I would like your opinions on Wilsons strap trap openers or the direct drive rack and pinion style trap openers. Which is better and why?

I have had a couple guys tell that the straps are not real good when you need to regulate the flow for feed products, And that sometimes snow and ice builds up on the strap and you have to knock it off before unloading. I have the rack and pinion with Shur Co electric openers. I won't ever own a trailer with out them again. Well worth the money.

i wouldnt have the straps because if you haul haul something very dense and heavy like fertilizer or rock, etc, the straps really have to stretch to get the door opened. I have heard of guys breaking straps before.

From first hand expereice. Starps don't work very good for feed indgredients. on heavy product like lime and dical, had the traps wiggle open and lose product. Had straps break on those products and when your on the road, its tough to get them through a Wilson dealer to get them fixed. Any heavy products is tough on the starps. All my feed ingredients trailers are rack and pinion. If your just hauling grain, starps are perfect.

I own a Wilson with the strap trap system and frankly its a pain. If I were to do it again I would either cut the purchase price by several thousand because of them or just pass on the purchase and look for a direct drive system. To their credit they do operate smoothly if you run them slowly in and out. However its another part to replace and it requires 4 straps per hopper and a bushing set for each on about every couple of years thats about 250.00 for eight with bushings from Wilson Manufacturing.
