WORKING WITH CARRIERS, BROKERS AND SHIPPERS AS FUEL INCREASES

The simple solution would be a fuel surcharge, right? Unfortunately most grain and feed commodities are traded with a set rate per ton or cwt or bushel when the contract is made. It is sometimes painful or ackward to ask the broker or shipper for an increased rate because of that set rate. It is also just as painful to ask a carrier to haul for the same rate when fuel has increase $.10-.15/gal in a week.

What are some of the best ways to work together to avoid the conflicts of increased diesel prices on freight rates?
