Does it exist?

Is there a point where you will throw the towel in? Is there a line that you won’t cross? Would you be willing to sacrifice your family and all your belongings to complete with that guy who lives in his truck and owns nothing else, just so you can claim the title of the last trucker standing? How bad do you want it?

  1. Throw in the towel? No, not until some outside force such as health, or the health of my wife, or my elderly parents force me to stay home.
  2. Is there a line I won’t cross? ABSOLUTELY. I’ve parked my hopper for not willing to cross my line.
  3. My trucking business could never put me in the position to sacrifice my family, belongings, or anything else for that matter to compete at the level you described. Before I was anywhere near that position, I’d put it in the barn, turn off the battery switch, and wait for better days, as long as it took. If my business could in any way back me into that corner, I wouldn’t be doing it in the first place.
  4. Nothing, no amount of money, or love of the industry is worth sacrificing your family, belongings, or personal finances. Life is way too short to let that happen. There are too many ways to make a living where you wouldn’t have to make that sacrifice.

How in the heck could that simple question, surely put out there to stimulate conversation, get 2 negative responses? This is a forum designed to get people to share thoughts, experiences, and perspectives. Square up to your keyboard, and please, provide your perspective. I'm interested to know if I'm the only one that thinks the way I do...SHEESH

Okay. How bad do I want what? What is "it"?

Here's a little tale a customer friend told me. "Burn The Geraniums". A nursery (flowers etc.) had a policy that they would burn whatever leftover stock they had at the end of the season. They did not sell the "left overs" at a discounted price. They controlled the supply. Start selling at discount, people will wait UNTIL it's "on sale".

How about a cliche'. "It's either this, or nothing". There's no right or wrong answer. Surely depends of the individual and the situation.

I don't like the "road" much anymore. I don't hate it. But it's not the same. I know how to do it well. I make a comfortable living and go home.
