none if they have a choice. 100% if it's part of the agreement when the load is booked.

It's a way for a brokerage or company to try to polish a poor rate. Seems it's sort of a thing of the past.

New guy here, I see this post is about a year old, has anything changed? My little dab of hauling, a rate is quoted, and nothing about fuel has been said by either party. Is it up to the carrier to ask for fuel surcharge? If you don't... ALL brokers just keep it? Is fuel surcharge just included in the rate? Be nice to have a list of brokers that just honestly hand over the fuel surcharge to the guy buying the fuel. I see most of the brokers on bulk loads have really good reviews and 5 stars, I would take that to mean the carrier feels they are being treated fairly. So, far the 3-4 brokers I've dealt with wouldn't get 5 stars. Any insight or advice on fuel surcharge would be welcome. Thanks

This is for Mr. Wernger. I have never used a FSC to "polish a rate." And, why do you even need it if you get the rate you can negotiate? When you have contract freight, the fuel can go either way rapidly, thus protecting the carrier from large swings in fuel prices. If you don't have contract freight then ya really don't need a FSC.

Well Mr. Nickel I don't believe you are in my stack of carrier agreements. Most times I'm not given the option of negotiating on the rate it's either take it or someone else will. But we're offering x% fuel surcharge depending on what happened on the national fuel board. I think it's a sad way for a company to do business with out budging on the actual rate. Its still lipstick on a pig. Fuel goes up so does the cost of transportation. Fuel goes down so does the rate. I dont like when rates go down but if fuel goes down what can I do park the truck cause it's to cheap to run.

I used to pull step deck. I know broker that was big on fuel surcharge to polish a rate to make it look better if you didnt take time to figure it quick. I never took the loads anyway. But yes now you just agree on a rate
