Insurance issue

Guys need some ideas on different insurance. I hired a driver he’s 18 and been driving for a self insured company. When I sent all his info in to my insurance 45 days ago they were fine with him. So I hired him. Fast forward to today. I get a call from insurance and they say they won’t insure him unless he has 4 years of having a CDL and 4 years driving experience. So called around to some other local agents and same story besides progressive. Only issue with progressive is they want $3000.00 month for coverage. That’s quoting two hopper trailers and two trucks. My current policy is 800.00 month. We are Iowa intrastate authority only. So my question is has anyone ran into this before..and have any recommendations on a insurance company that would take this on with his age? He’s a really good worker and a complete clean driving record. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks — looking for recommendations.

It's always been that way. They can't get a job without experience and they can't get experience without a job. If you want him your gonna have to pay up for insurance, but there's no way you can justify that, even if it's your kid. I waited till my son was 23 and it was still too expensive.

If you want to keep him on just tell him that you will have to pay him substancially less compared to older drivers with more experiance . Otherwise , in less you are running a non-profit business you will just have to pass on hiring someone that is that young.

If you think stuff is difficult now just wait, becuase the war against small carriers is picking up steam rapidly, there is a story over at transportation nation about what to expect, I have posted a link to it below. tell him to go try applying for a volunteer firefigher. I do think there are some exceptions for people that are or were military or firefighters

I hired my son at 18. Wasn't a big deal. Im insured with Great West. He had 10 years as a race car driver which they viewed as a plus, go figure. I have hired a couple of others in las 8 years. It was a fight but Great West took them. Art Pfluger

I also live in Iowa. When I had a younger driver, I think he was 21 at the time I had Grinnell Mutual, my insurable radius was 200 miles but the cost was a third of what it was with Progressive.
