New Authority help

Feb 26, 2024 at 09:35 AM CST
I am currently a lease operater and have been for about 3 years, debating on getting my own authority but can't seem to find the specific. Liquids that I haul(seed oils, liquid yeast, vinegar.) are these loads all dedicated to the bigger companies like in leased to now or am I just not looking in the right place? Bills loads shows about 5 loads per state in the south.

If it is food grade, it is definitely way harder to find your own work.

I would do serious inquiries about the acutal rates and avialability versus expectations. Also ensure you have enough capital and getting a good insurance company. A crappy one will cost you money. All the best.

Unless you have steady work lined up before leaving your lease agreemet, I would not make the jump. Food grade of all sorts is challenging and is indeed dominated by large carriers. One of the reasons is the liability involved with contamination. It's just harder to get someone to give you a chance when that risk is involved. I have a friend who gave it a shot through brokers, but ended up running lubricants and chemicals (and disqualifying his trailer from ever running food grae) instead because there just wasn't enough work available, similar to what you have seen. Even the chemical side of tanking has been a major challenging when relying on brokered freight. Running your own authority in a specialized indsutry is always best served when you have steady work lined up ahead of time. Easier said than done, I know, but it is the reality. Perhaps your current carrier has a brokerage division and could broker to you the same freight you are hauling leased on with them but at a higher percentage.

If you have been delivering or loading at the same places for an extended period as a lease driver start bulding on your repuation as a depenable driver. Start asking around and building relationships at these points and you might be suprised what you can do. But I would not do this on spot market, I would definately want some contracts lined up first. That being said you can start working on your LLC, business model, DOT/MC numbers, Ins Quotes, etc. Its going to take a few months to get all that done, and just because you get the numbers does mean you have to go active imediately. Spetrum Ins Group is really good at finding reasonable ins for new authorities. Call Matt Olson @715-858-9865 And best of luck. The most important piece of going independent is personal relationships directly with shippers.
