I'm thinking about getting into my own truck pulling a hopper. Can I get some input as far as if I should or shouldn't do it.

Listen to Art. While you may think you are getting a bargain on that equipment, a bargain does you no good if you the market can not sustain the payments on it. If you can pay cash for the truck and afford to let it sit for a year, if Trump wins then the market will pick back up, if Clinton wins then it will be more of the same. Just a statement of facts, I am neither party.
It really is better to be a company driver right now for .50 per mile. There are shippers and brokers offering .76 per mile to Independent Carriers to haul their freight. Better to go broke at home then to make the other man money while your going broke. I have equipment parked right now, so that should tell you something. We just don't want to see you become another statistic that looses everything trying to chase a dream that has been broken by greed. |

I agree, company drivers are doing better with the big fleets.

Lance,
With Respect to the others that replied to your question, you do what the what the P&L tells you that you can do. If you can make a profit DO IT. There is nothing more safisfying in my opinion than running a truck with your own name on the side. Its a pride that many of us know. However, Mr. Jordan is right its a very competitive time right now and the ones who dont know what the true cost per mile is will FAIL! Hope It works out for you and I wish you luck either way. |
