Anerican frameless half round dump

Feb 16, 2020 at 10:07 AM CST
I've been in the market for a used half round trailer and have seen several American half rounds in my price range and desired specs. I can't seem to find any information on this brand of trailer. I have looked at Mac trailers and Alumatech but the Macs are a bit out of my price range and the alumatechs don't meet my specs. I would appreciate any information on American brand trailers or any other information on half round end dumps.

Well they have mac and East up there in Ohio where you're at I don't know if East and make a round trailer for you but that can be able to do something with you or locate you a used trailer in your price range you just have to persevere cuz they do hold their value pretty well

I had an American 39ft frameless, 2000 year model. They were made in Rockport Indiana and I was told by a reputable frame shop that they sold their patent to Mac around the year 2000. Then Mac started making the half round of their own. Look all them Americans and older Macs over good, they all start cracking the tub away from the frame near the front axle. Mine had a lot of welding done to it before I bought it but it did not need to have any additional welds done.

Did your American hold up pretty decent? Was the empty weight comparable to the Mac half rounds? I've heard they weigh anywhere from 9000 to 12000 depending on what dimensions and features you have.

I'm also considering a square bottom frameless as there are more options in my price range. I would like to find something pretty lightweight so I was wondering if anybody has any suggestions and maybe some empty weights for different trailers

We ran a couple half round Mac's for a few years, cracks are just part of it, or at least was back in the 05-08 years. We have since switched to all square framless trailers - 4 East Genesis from 2005-2015 models and all have been excellent, we also run a 2008 Mac MVP and has been equally good compared to the East trailers but does way about 800-1000 lbs more.

We went to the square trailers for hauling DDG's (which we don't much anymore), I'm very happy with our square trailers. Easier to load bean meal or urea on, don't crack, and the load sits lower going down the road which makes them less top heavy.

I have round bottom MAC and a sheet and post East. I’ll like the round bottom better. I hate cleaning out around the dog house of the East. The East has a liner. Material builds up under the liner at the back and gets under the flanges on the sides. The grooves they cut in the liners so they’ll bend up the sides fill up with spilt beans and all kinds of trash. It takes forever to clean them out. The MAC doesn’t have a liner and I don’t really need one to haul feed and grain. If I was hauling rock and sand all the time I’d have a liner in it. I’m 1,200 lbs lighter with my 40’x96”x66” MAC, 28,800 full of fuel 389 Pete 36” bunk. East is a 39’x96”x60”.

My truck without my trailer weighs about 18500 and I'm wanting to get a trailer that will keep me at about 30000. I like the half rounds but most of those are out of my price range. I've looked at some Travis trailers and Vantage trailers but having some trouble finding empty weights on some of the older frameless trailers. If you guys have any information on different trailers in that weight range I would really appreciate it.

The round bottoms will get you under 30,000 probably closer to 29,000 actually. The square trailers will still keep you in the 30-31 range. When we started out 12 years ago I bought a couple trailers from Tbone sales in Baltic, Ohio. They are rebuilders that do excellent work, I'm actually still running one of his trailers.

Can't say enough good stuff about these guys, as time went on we have been able to buy newer trailers. You really have to look to see where the damage was, they polish everything when done. I've been extremly happy with them.

Well for what it is worth I have been in the dump trailer business for 30 years. We have had half round, square, and tapered bodys frameless frame type. Most trailers have advantages and disadvantages. You are bargin shopping thats a tough spot to be in. Not knowing what your budget is or what your wanting to haul will determine a lot. Half rounds advantages are 2 first is weight they will be about 500 pounds less for the same cubic yards example a 39x60x96 square trailer will have to have 63" sides to get the same yards. the liner will weigh abot 200 pounds less as it will only be 8 foot instead of 10 foot wide. 2nd advantage is if your unloading though the coal door there're is no corners to clean out. they do pull a little easier as they are a little more aerodynamic. I would not own a half round for any reason a this point we have had Alumitech trailers from Everlite never had one from Travis. We have owned a Travis bought new. Service is in Texas. You living where you do I would be looking at Trailstar thats what I run I have 20 of them now and have owned 35 or so. The dealer in your area is Rodoc. East are ok Mac is also ok. You will not beat the service you get from Trailstar. We have a 2011 Trailstar 39x60x96 with tarp and liner coal door 11r22.5 virgin yokohama tires. 34,000.00

I wanted to thank you for letting me know about Tbone sales. Looked them up and they had a Mac half round for a very reasonable price. Just went over there today and pulled it home and they are very straight forward about the work that was done and they really did a nice job on the trailer.

I'm glad to hear that it worked out Kellen. Haven't bought anything there in several years, but I know they do top notch work. Was always very happy with their work. After I had bought a couple from him a few years later we turned another one over dumping lime and took it out to them, fixed it and ran it a few more years. We have been fortunate as time goes on to be able to buy newer trailers, but it was a great way for us to get started.
