ELD-anyone else shop around

I started looking at ELD's because I want to get used to how mine works before the mandate. What I found that will work for me is made by VDORoadLog. It is simple and easy to use with no monthly charge and what I considered a reasonable price. I don't want to get into long discussions about whether or not we have to have them or if we need them. It is a mandate I want to comply with so I did my due diligence and found this and wanted to share it with others.

I started shopping around for one to find out which one would be a good one to get. Been looking at the Rand Mcnally and was wondering if anybody has tried this one and what is the good and bad of this one, or is there a better one to try.

We are in the process of installing the ELD50 units from Rand Mcnally. Very quick and easy to install. We are running 12 units right now and installing the rest before the middle of September. After shopping around we found that these were the best option for us and the drivers/owner ops are catching on fairly quickly.

I won't buy a vdo. Had it for a while. I would put fuel in the truck in nebraska and then when I go to record it, it would show I purchased fuel in Iowa. I was atleast 10 miles from the border. I called customer service and they told me there wasn't any way to change it. One time I did the post trip inspection and logged out over the weekend, when I came back it had me redflagged and on duty the whole weekend. The touch screen is really small and hard to use and seemed like the touch part of it was not working very good. Had trouble with it freezing operation a couple times too. I only used it for 6 months and finally had enough and went back to paper logs. It was way faster. I am now looking into the rand McNally models right now. Will try to make a decision before harvest starts so I can get used to running it. Vdo wouldn't refund my money after I asked within the first 3 months of ownership and having lots of program problems. The local peterbilt dealership had installed them in their parts vans and they too are looking for something else.

I have used K-T on I-pad couple years, makes a nice neat log
but to use their E-Log program fleets of 10 or less
trucks must pay for year in advance. Won't work for me.

A bill that would exempt carriers from state laws requiring paid meal and rest breaks for drivers and, at least short term, exempt livestock haulers from compliance with the federal electronic logging device has been passed by the House Appropriations Committee’s transportation subcommittee. The full Appropriations Committee is set to debate and consider the legislation Monday, July 19.

In the wake of the 2018 DOT funding bill’s unveiling Tuesday, a group representing cow haulers applauded the language exempting livestock haulers from the Dec. 18 compliance date. The bill does not specify when livestock haulers would be required to adopt ELDs. It only prevents FMCSA from enforcing the ELD mandate in the 2018 fiscal year, which ends Sept. 30, 2018. “This delay will give us time to address our industry-specific concerns, and give us more time to work with federal regulators to add needed flexibility, as hauling livestock has many challenges and variables,” says Kevin Kester, president-elect of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association.

The provisions are not yet law, however, and must clear significant hurdles before being enacted. In addition to passage in the U.S. House, the Senate must also pass the bill or provisions that match the House’s trucking riders.
