E-Logging

I'm sitting home this fine day wondering what everybody thinks about the e-log. Do you like it, hate it, or are you indifferent to it? Personally, I hate it. It seems to make me drive when I'm tired, and feel like I'm constantly racing a freaking clock. I also find you need to take considerably more time trip planning so you don't run out of time with nowhere to stop. Aslo, who the heck sleeps 10 hours a day?

Typically, I'm in the 150 air mile bubble so have never really worried about it. However, the last month or so, Ive been running over the road and have come to HATE the elog. So much so, I'm seriously considering buying an older truck, rebuilding it, and running it instead. I REALLY miss the days when we could run paper logs. Times were simpler, and less stressful.

On a side note, since we have had the pleasure of running HOS exempt for some loads due to the chicharona virus, I'm wondering if the accident stats involving CMVs have jumped through the roof? If not, (and I doubt they have) It seems to me we don't really need the elogs in the first place.

It's just my opinion, and I could be wrong.

What do you think?

It’s more than 3 years since the ELD, and look around, you constantly see brokers and dispatch services competing against each other for trucks everywhere on this site, from the forum to the jobs section like never before, at a time when most of the economy has been shut down? Most adults don’t want to drive a giant baby monitor around, everywhere you look you see yards full of trucks, with no drivers as the ATA begs the government to put high school kids behind the wheel.

Not an eld fan myself. First, you're not required to sleep 10 hours. Requirement is 8 hours sleeper berth time. 2 hours for misc time eating, shower etc. Yes, makes a driver and dispatch required to be more efficient in their duties. I believe bigger companies benefited from the eld because of the caliber of driver's they hired. I'm 67 years old and thinking about retirement. Have a kit that I'm considering selling along with a dry van. Not sure yet.

I only run the southwest, but i've seen a large upswing in single truck rollovers between 2 and 5 am. All of these are late model trucks with ELD. Dispatchers tell the driver to go when he should be sleeeping. How is it cost effective lose a $200,000 truck and trailer pluse your cargo and injure your driver, for the lack of 2-3 hours of sleep.

I dont know Dave..I was on 36 highway from Illinois across N. MIssouri yesterday and and it was a almost a constant convoy of trucks...Since its spring and commodites are hot and farmers have mad money, so lots of ag..Grain, cattle, hogs, logs, tankers, construction, stepdecks with equipment..But of course lots and lots of cattle, hogs, elevators and ethanol plants across N.Missouri... And of course all the city to city dry van holders.. I don't disagree with what ypu are saying just telling what I seen....Have a good day..

Two things that may help explain that are, with the ELD trucks are less productive so it now takes more trucks to move the same volume of freight, since the detention and parking problems have not yet been fixed, and the fact it’s now spring time, so everyone is rotating inventory, landscape materials are moving now, farmers need seed and fertilizer, and most stores are stocking up summertime items. How many of these trucks are bouncing more or waiting at the truck stop for a backhual? Usually if they need you they will find the money for a fuel surcharge, but lately there’s been a lot of grumbling so that might be a indicator of true demand in the market.
