Oil usage

I have a 2014 579 pete with the ISX cummins 525 hp and it started using oil at 150000 miles so I took it to the local cummiins shop and they said it was carbon packed between the top of the pistons and liner .So they tore it down and put the latest and greatest pistons and liners in it and that was done at 195000 and now it has 206000 on it and it is still using freaking oil .... So has anybody else have this problem ??

Every ISX I have now or have ever owned used at least 1 gallon f oil between 12,000 mile oil changes since the day they were born. How much is yours using?

At first about 2 gal for 20000 miles and then I changed it ..But the as it got more miles on then it used more oil and now it has 11000 on this oli change a I put 2.5 gallons in this weekend . And mind you this is after cummins put new pistons and liners in . Unless it has to break in again ?

How much do you idle it? We were told when breaking them in to keep it idling as little as possible and if you did idle it make sure it runs 1000 rpm when idling.

That's the same instructions I received too.

I had one the rings didn't seat after a rebuild and it used oil until it was built again. I also had one using about that same amount that turned out to be the turbo.

All our ISX use oil. I have a couple of N14 that never use a gallon between oil changes.

I had a cummins s create motor put 8n used oil from the get go and the blow by tube looked like a 318 Detroit come to find out the out sourced Mexicans that do the remain had the wrong rings on all 6 pistons

Yes. If I understand the question correctly the rebuilt engine will need a break in but even without a break in period it shouldn't use that much oil so quick.

Down time is a killer but I think I would have Cummins re-lick their calf.

Jerry here is the deal cummins is aware of the oil usage and they told me to keep track of the usage. So I have been doing that and I will change the oil at 18000 miles and keep track of it on the new oil change . I had the choice when I was looking for a new truck meaning a pete and this one has the cummins and some had paccar so I choose the cummins otherwise I like trk...

I'm not sure I trust a Paccar but so far over 30 years or so I get good results and warranty work with Cummins in Houston and Abilene. I wouldn't get disgusted with them just yet.

I had a 2005 ISX overhauled last fall, not a Cummins shop. As far as break in they told me to vary my cruise speed, meaning RPM. I don't remember them saying for how long. This engine has never used oil. Before or after the overhaul. I suppose a lot of possible issues will a new one with all of the emission equipment.

You're from DeWitt. Cummins in Cedar Rapids has treated me well for a lot of years. Usually the second shift guys.

600 ISX, mine uses a gallon every 8000 miles. Overhauled 300,000 ago.

They did rebuild it again I was just saying that the create motor was screwed up from the great cummins Mexican recon plant with the wrong rings after pete of St Louis rebuilt the new create motor no more problems a shame the govt put cat out of business and this is what we have left

Don your going to long on oil changes the isx Cummins need to be changed at 12,000 miles the oil breaks down between 10,000 and 12,000 miles as it breaks down it burns it off it's tipical to add a gallon between 8,000 and 12,000 anything over 12,000 you will be adding a gallon around 800 miles due to oil break down

They say oil doesn't break down, it's the combustion that kills it. Theirs idiots Iv heard on the radio going 250000 plus with a "special" contaminat filter, I was told oil is the cheapest rebuild, I change mine at 10000

Cummins recommends 400 hrs. or 15000 miles whichever comes first. We've rebuilt 4 under warranty. Done with Cummins!
