Why do people do the owner/op thing if they own their own truck? I just don't get it. Why not get your own Authority.

Dan here is your answer:

Some are good at driving and just need to stay company drivers
Some are good at just Owning the truck and driving and need to stay Owner Operators
Some are good at running the full blown business and need to stay Carriers

When an individual believes that just because they own a truck they can run the rest of the show as well. Well that would be why we have so many out here running right now for $1 per mile. Just think about it, there is nothing wrong with whatever level one is comfortable being in our industry. I know plenty that are great at their level but when I have asked to switch places with them so I could go back to just being a driver, they don't want the extra headaches associated with being a carrier.

I would agree with Mr. Jordan 100%. Have gone from my own truck to 6 Owner/Operators as of Dec. 1st. There is a lot more to it than sitting at a desk with your feet up. Talking on the phone and Playing on the Internet. We do a lot of Cross Border Work. Some days dealing with Customs Brokers makes me wish all I had to do is drive.

Most of my guys are happy with just driving the truck that they picked out and they take care of and not worrying about details. Several of them have had their own authority and like it better this way.

Guess it all boils down to "How much do you want to do?"

Yep. It boils down to how hard do you want to work and how much PITA stress you can handle.

I did not mean to bash on anybody. I've just been looking in to others O/O programs. Becouse a friend what's to get back in to driving and wanted to come run under my Authority. Like you said he doesn't want to deal with paper work just drive. Some of these deals are bad.

I understand some people don't want to or can't deal with all the paper work and other stuff that go's along with doing it all your self.

And I'm sorry I may have been venting some. Have driver that likes to tell me how to run my business. He had been an O/O for 20+ years and been with that many companies. Has no idea what tags cost or insurance. Or even what the rate should be.
