SELF DRIVING SEMI TRUCKS - REALLY?
On Tuesday, several former Google, Tesla and Apple engineers announced they had quit their prestigious jobs to start Otto, which aims to sell automation kits for the massive semi-trailers that crowd America’s highways. The company says it has logged more than 10,000 test miles and recently tested its truck on a Nevada highway.
Technology is going to put everyone out of work. We have self-checkouts in grocery stores and restaurants. We have self serve gas stations (yep I am old enough to remember full service gas stations). We have self-check in at clinics and hair appointments. How many jobs have we lost because of technology. It is a sad, sad world when you can't speak to someone about your credit card or a bill because the automated voice on the other end of the phone wants to know why you are calling and routes you to pre-recorded messages.
I, for one, don't want the roads to be dominated by vehicles that don't have a brain when someone decides at the last minute to pull out in front of it. When someone decides to slam their brakes on in the middle of the interstate for no apparent reason. What happens when something goes wrong with the computer chip that runs these vehicles. Who is the D.O.T. going to perform an inspection with? Who gets the ticket for speeding in an unexpected construction zone or work zone.
I wish we could go back to the days with no cell phones and computers :(
