Good afternoon all,

Does anyone know of a company that offers training for end dumps or pneumatic trailers?? I'm willing to pay someone to shadow them or ride along for a couple of days. I have dump truck and chemical tanker experience from years ago . I own a hopper, however I'm looking to branch out. I see more loads for end dumps or pneumatic trailers that pay enough to survive. I have considered suspending my operating authority and leasing on to a carrier that offers loads with both. Any positive help will be appreciated. Email me at [email protected] if you have any suggestions.

Thanks

Have you ever called on any of the aggregate loads on this site? You might want to see what those loads pay before buying a dump trailer. I have been in touch with 3 different brokers for 3 different aggregate loads to haul with my belt trailer. The loads paid soo poorly that I didn't even bother trying to negotiate a better rate. I have heard pneumatic and tanker pay well, it just seems like a small amount of loads though. Good luck!

I have liquid tankers and have been thinking about buying a hopper. Our rates are good, but the loads are too far in between. With the other trailer types there are more loads for less money. Hoppers in particular load and unload very fast, and there are thousands of loads all over the country, as well as there aren't specific types of hoppers for different products that go in them.

End dumps are sketchy. If you ever aren't on high alert when you stand it up, that's the day you need to quit.

A pneumatic requires a blower, that's like $10-11k, and with the oilfield not using as many for frac sand there are a lot of those sitting around.

Sorry I'm not offering assistance, just perspective.

Pneumatic rates are HORRIBLE right now! Don't do it! For what a trailer, blower, hoses and accessories cost, the roi will be 100 years. My pneumatic is currently in the shop getting bottom load added and I've been bidding on vans and reefers all morning. No luck yet.

Pneumatic load rates only look good on paper right now. When you factor in being empty 50% of the time (which is reality) it even less appealing. If you can find a load going back you'll need a washout. Good luck finding one of those. When you do it will be 100s of miles away and cost your second born. Finding something short distance that you can turn and burn is where I've found the best luck. That or going from one side of the country to the other. But you'll likely have to eat it most of the way back. Good luck.

This speaks to the issue of margins. If you have a $1/ mile margin on a $5/mile rate, you can go negative real quick. When your empty mile cost you 1:1 again every dollar of profits you have to get paid for empty mile. Going out of route 50 miles at 40 cents per mile fuel cost Isn't the same as $1 per mile fuel cause. Also when so many wash facilities shut down are out of route miles for wash outs have come close to doubling.

That post reads like I'm illiterate, voice to text isn't your friend.

How do you possibly have a 40 cent per mile fuel cost?

I don't, it's a comparison of fixed profit pricing vs margin pricing. Something as simple as a head wind now can eat up significant profit. When margins are low profits disappear much more easily.

Do you have software that does that, or is it just formulas you use to determine that?
